Sophie Van Hees

Hi, I’m Sophie!

Mom, wife, stepmom, seasoned expat, fiery redhead, certified yoga instructor, and French teacher.

Originally from Belgium, I have lived in three continents before moving to Seattle for love. Earlier this year I moved to Northern Virginia with my blended multicultural family: Dutch hubby, American step kids and melting-pot babies. Eliott is 13, Vera 9. Saskia was born in April 2019 and Georges (yes, with an “s”) in May 2020. 13 months apart, yep.

Yoga came into my life as I was living in Southeast Asia. Living an uprooted life was exciting, but stressful, and had taken a toll on my lower back. I first took it as physical therapy; it then grew on me. My high-energy, full hearted, scattered self had to learn that strength on its own was not enough to get through the life I wanted, I needed balance, flexibility and a centered and quiet mind to welcome struggles and changes as growth opportunities.

I joined Fit4mom in May 2019 in the suburbs of Seattle with my newborn daughter Saskia. I had seen something similar in the show Jane the Virgin, and was merely looking for a way to work out without having to pay for a babysitter. I was hooked right away, would not shut up about it. My mom and friends back home are jealous of Stroller Strides. I wanted to become an instructor from the get-go. We moved to Dunn Loring in March, and I joined this village as soon as the in person classes resumed. This village has been such an amazing bowl of fresh air and unconditional support through these trying times.

I can’t wait to give back by sharing my yoga practice and eventually maybe a few French songs on the plaza!
